How is stranded cotton made?

Stranded cotton is made from pure cotton and is treated with caustic soda in a process called mercerisation. This gives the thread a lovely sheen. The thread is also 'gassed' to remove fine surface hairs and make it much smoother. This results in a soft, strong thread that is unlikely to snap or fluff and will last for many years.
